Chowmein
History
Chowmein is a Chinese dish made from stir-fried noodles, vegetables, and sometimes meat or tofu. The name "chowmein" comes from the Taishanese words "chow" (stir-fried) and "mein" (noodles).
This dish originated in China and has spread throughout the world, with many regional variations. It's one of the most popular Chinese dishes internationally.
Ingredients
For the Noodles
- 200g chowmein noodles or egg noodles
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar
- Salt to taste
For the Vegetables
- 1 cup cabbage, shredded
- 1 carrot, julienned
- 1 bell pepper, sliced
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 tsp black pepper
Cooking Utensils
Instructions
Cook Noodles
Boil noodles according to package instructions. Drain and rinse with cold water. Set aside.
Heat Wok
Heat oil in a wok or large pan over high heat until smoking.
Sauté Aromatics
Add garlic and ginger. Stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add Vegetables
Add carrots, bell pepper, and onion. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly tender.
Add Cabbage
Add cabbage and continue stir-frying for another 2 minutes.
Add Noodles
Add cooked noodles to the wok. Toss everything together.
Season
Add soy sauce, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
Garnish and Serve
Garnish with green onions. Serve hot with chili sauce if desired.
